Power Certification Challenges

Given the application's specific requirements, it was crucial to identify a solution that not only adhered to strict environmental certifications like VITA62 but also delivered high power levels. Although the organization sought an off-the-shelf solution to meet budgetary constraints and ensure quick delivery, it encountered difficulties in finding the ideal match. This situation transformed when they discovered Astrodyne TDI's groundbreaking MercuryFlex 3-Phase High Voltage solution, M3PHV.

Unique Power Requirements:

  • Efficient and space-saving design with advanced thermal management
  • Designed for three-phase, 4-wire operation to prevent damage from low input voltages.
  • With an efficiency of over 89%, the system delivers 200V DC at 60A DC for optimal performance
  • 200V DC, allowing for a versatile output voltage range from 15V DC to 450V DC
  • Programmable to 0V DC, adjustment is not possible within the range of 0 to 14.9V DC
  • Designed to meet stringent MIL-STDs

Case Study Achieving Isolation and Minimizing EMI with Toroidal Transformers in Medical Beds (1)Astrodyne TDI's Innovative Power Solution

Astrodyne TDI distinguishes itself by providing a power block that not only complies with military standards for EMI, shock, and vibration performance but also offers exceptional power efficiency. The innovative M3PHV solution effectively merges the advantages of a COTS power supply with a cost-efficient strategy that outperforms the custom systems of competitors. This 12 kW AC-DC Rectifier Power Supply, contained within a 6U chassis, functions as an isolated converter, converting 3-phase 480VAC to 0-200VDC. By linking pairs of power supplies in series across each phase-to-phase voltage, voltage balance is achieved through an autotransformer that allocates the differential power between each unit. Electronically, the unit output current is shared to ensure that the input power differential between units remains minimal, typically around 100-200W at peak output power.

With a steadfast dedication to precision, the system is carefully designed to meet rigorous quality and performance standards, removing the need for additional certifications. Adhering to MIL-STD-810G with Change 2, Method 514.7, Procedure I, the system performs exceptionally under the stress of a random vibration spectrum for 2 hours per axis, ensuring consistent reliability and stability even in the most demanding environments (0.711Grms). Furthermore, by MIL-STD-810G Method 516.7, Procedure I, the system undergoes comprehensive testing for Functional Shock, navigating the Shock Response Spectrum with a peak of 20g at 15Hz crossover. This guarantees that the system remains robust and functional when subjected to severe shocks and vibrations.
