Case Study: Providing Back-Up Power for Robotic Surgery Systems
Online Backup Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for Robotic Surgery Systems
Astrodyne TDI (ATDI) has partnered with a leading innovative medical manufacturer to assist in developing a robotic surgery system. This project employs a backup online Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) specifically designed to support a robotic surgery device. This essential application required a reliable power source to ensure continuous operation during surgical procedures, as even a brief power interruption could have severe consequences.
Powering Requirements for a Surgical Robotic System
The objective was to find a certified rack mount UPS capable of delivering a 2kVA power capacity with a minimum runtime of 4 minutes. Additionally, the UPS needed to include SNMP V3 internet controls for secure and efficient remote monitoring and management of the power system. The UPS had to be versatile for use in various countries, necessitating compatibility with different electrical standards and voltages worldwide. It required a 2kVA 120VAC output to meet the power demands of the robotic surgery device, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. The system needed to provide more than 4 minutes of runtime to allow for a safe shutdown or transition to an alternative power source in the event of a power outage. A lithium battery was crucial to offer a lightweight, efficient, and durable power solution, reducing maintenance and replacement costs. Compliance with IEC60601-1 Safety standards was essential, as these regulations ensure the safety and effectiveness of medical electrical equipment, protecting both patients and healthcare professionals.
Astrodyne TDI's Power Solution for Robotic Surgery Systems
ATDI has meticulously redesigned its well-established standard runtime PowerBridge™ UPS to meet the unique needs of this critical application. By enhancing the original design, ATDI has developed a solution that not only meets but exceeds the rigorous requirements of supporting a robotic surgery device. This improved version of the PowerBridge™ is specifically engineered to provide exceptional performance and reliability, ensuring uninterrupted operation of the robotic surgery device.
The system is designed for universal input operation across 90-264VAC, ensuring adaptability and seamless functionality across various electrical standards and voltages globally. It features a 2KVA 120VAC output tailored to meet the power needs of the robotic surgery device, guaranteeing optimal performance and reliability during crucial procedures. The solution offers over four minutes of runtime after 500 charge/discharge cycles, allowing for safe shutdowns or transitions to alternative power sources during outages. Utilizing advanced LiFePO4 battery technology, it provides a durable power solution with a ten-year life expectancy, reducing maintenance and replacement costs. The built-in 2 Means of Patient Protection (2MOPP) isolation maintains the highest safety standards, adhering to strict medical regulations to protect patients and healthcare professionals. Additionally, SNMP V3 encryption enables secure and efficient remote monitoring and management, ensuring reliable control and oversight of the power system.
Our solution is distinguished as the most compact lithium battery solution available at this power level, offering unmatched space efficiency without sacrificing performance. Furthermore, the SNMP V3 communication capability provides a secure and advanced method for managing the power system, setting our solution apart from others in the market.
